Okay, it would be difficult for me to explain in words the sheer depth of my recently-discovered intense dislike for Thursdays. Bad stuff has been happening around here on Thursdays. And not like, "Waiter, there's a dead fly in my soup" kind of bad. More of a, "Waiter, there's a dead guy in my soup" kind of bad. (No one has died, that's merely a metaphor.)
Yahaira is, unwittingly, attempting to restore goodness to Thursday. (And hey, Thursday deserves it. She does have the fortune to be Nearly Friday, and that's a blessed position.)
Le sigh. Four brilliant skeins of Yarntini. (Top to bottom: Cherry Cordial, Pure Knits, Gimlet, Mimosa.) Four brilliant, cheerful, shining skeins of Yarntini, begging to be knit. I have Eleanora on the needles, and I intentionally cast on for a pair of grey socks tonight, for Travis. I WANTED to cast on for a pair of Mimosa socks for me, but I'm trying to be strong. (Besides, I have Tilia on the needles for me.) There's also a Copper-Boo:
It's a hair-thin strand of copper wrapped around a hair-thin strand of bamboo, making it just a little bend-y (that's a technical term) and looks like fun to work with. It'd make amazing jewelry. (Someday....or tomorrow....you know, whenever I can't stand it anymore.)
And what's this?
Crunch, crunch, crunch....could this be a big ol' cake of Hip Knits aran silk? In the colour "Barbie", which just makes me love it that much more? (It's more fuschia than red, but Photoshop would not adjust the colour for me the way I would have liked.)
Could it be that I might not have ordered that? Could it be that was just a day-brightener? Could it be that I wanted to lie down and die of sheer joy right there in the post office lobby? (Could it be that I was riddled with guilt for my cashmere sock yarn once more and felt compelled to try winding it again, only to open the box in which it still rests, right next to my knitting chair, and almost burst into tears once more?)
Oh happy silky Thursday, I love you!
Life is getting in the way of knitting a bit around here. There's a lot of MD/PhD/DMD action lately, too, and that's been less conducive to knitting than I would have thought - no one's been willing to let me sit in a waiting room for more than five minutes. When I didn't have a sedentary hobby, I used to have to wait for hours....now they rush me right in. Go figure.
So I only have marginal Tilia progress. I will probably not continue to post daily updates of the three chart repeats I completed in two days. For now, I'm still excited, and still loving it.
On to grey sock and brown sweater! (Hang on, cheery Mimosa socks, I'm coming!!)
here's for making thursdays feel good again!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you liked all the yarn and your consolation prize till your replacement cashmere gets here. you can send me the one you have now so you dont have to look at it again!
your knitting is looking great!
I hope whatever's going on straightens itself out soon
xo
This may be an un-answerable question but I thought I'd try it. I have a friend who knits. I want to send her a gift. I don't know what she wants/likes (b/c I don't know anything about knitting). Is there a safe something that basically everyone likes? Or is that dumb? You don't have to answer, I just thought I'd ask since you seem like you know a thing or two about it. (You must if you got your Man to do it.)
ReplyDeleteI have the occasional knitting gift from a non-knitting friend. Sometimes they're neat, sometimes not so much. The trick is to have an idea of what she likes.
ReplyDeleteMy suggestion would be first to see if she has an Amazon wishlist - if so, there's bound to be a few knitty books on there she'd like.
If not, an online gift certificate is a good choice, either from someplace like Amazon, or from a great 'net yarn shop like Pure Knits or KPixie. Or, if she lives in a town where there's a yarn shop, ask about gift certificates there. (Even if you're not in the same town - I called my mom's local shop and they took my order over the phone and mailed a gift certificate directly to her.)
If you don't like the GC route (some people find them impersonal, although I LOVE getting them), you can almost never go wrong with a skein or two of a really good yarn. No knitter is ever going to be turned off by a pretty skein of cashmere, angora, silk, or other luxury fiber in one of her favourite colours. If you know the colours she likes, try something like that. You don't have to spend a fortune - the Hip Knits Aran Silk that Pure Knits offers is only $13 for a skein that would easily make a long skinny scarf or other accessory item. (The Hip Knits cashmere sock yarn is a bit more of a splurge, but is gorgeous.) You could also try School Products for a good selection of beautifully priced luxury yarns.
There's all sort of accessory options too - cool stitch markers, fun notions, all that - you're not stuck with just yarn. But I KNOW every knitter loves yarn.
And of course, if there's a yarn shop near you, I also recommend just stopping in. Tell the owner or clerk that you don't knit but you have a friend who does and you're looking for a gift, and they should be able to help - give them an idea how much you're willing to spend. (Sure, I'd LOVE to buy all my friends a few skeins of $60 cashmere, but I don't actually like anyone that much. Not even myself.)
Beautiful yarn. I have to tell you that after making DH read your blog post about Travis knitting, Dh wanted to learn.
ReplyDeleteIt took a few days before he said yes but he's knitting. AND letting me document it!
And I may e crazy, but I love to unwind tangles....if you want me to give it shot, let me know
