Help Me! (Free Stuff Involved)

IMG_2197

Yeah.

I can't buy any more sock yarn. Not because sock yarn counts on a yarn diet (it doesn't, dammit) - but because considering my average output, I'll be long dead before all of this yarn is gone. And I want more.

I need to get rid of some yarn. Might as well give it away. But I don't know many knitters, other than my mom - and she doesn't knit socks.

Point? Take my yarn. Most (not quite all) of this yarn I'm not particularly attached to. And it's good stuff.

But I can't give it away for nothing. Give me something to fix what ails me:

1. I have too much sock yarn.

2. I have too much laceweight.

3. I have too many good single skeins - the kind of stuff of which I could only afford one skein.

I need pattern suggestions. Good patterns for lace, socks, and single-skein projects. Freebies are always good, but patterns to buy and book referrals are good too. I'll pick one, or a few, or several, patterns I really like and whoever suggested them will get yarn. Simple.

And you don't have to suggest something I've never seen before. If you want to suggest Jaywalkers, suggest Jaywalkers. (Okay, but don't suggest Jaywalkers because now that would be cheating.) If you suggest something I like, even if I've seen it (or knitted it already!) you'll win. I'd love to see some new stuff too, though...be creative, be clever, and of COURSE you can refer me to your own patterns. (You may get bonus points, as I'm not brilliant enough to write my own good patterns yet.)

Leave me suggestions by comment (leave a link, if it's a web project, so I can continue to be lazy....that's part of my problem) and make sure there's an email address or some way I can let you know if you win - and I'll take your personal tastes into consideration when selecting your yarn, of course!

Oh, and make as many suggestions as you want - the more gold you give me, the better your chances!

Let's give it a deadline - Wednesday? Yeah, Wednesday the 27th - say midnight, Eastern time.

Finally - I have few readers....so tell your friends, tell your circles, tell your readers. Seriously, I need to get rid of this stuff. I have a fiber festival coming up.

  3. Pick me! Pick me!

I don't have a lot of advice on socks, but I do love the Sock Bug patterns online.

In addition, for those lonely single skeins, have you considered the One Skein book. Well worth the money with lots of adaptable patterns. The spiral rib bag and felted bowls are worth their weight in gold for using up stash yarn.

PS: I was referred here by a non-knitting friend. Great site.

  4. PPS: So, I just noticed you were part of the One Skein exchange, so of course you are familiar with the book. Duh. Sorry!

However, I would also suggest the book Sensational Knitted Socks, it's a great resource for stitch patterns for socks. I use it regularly.

Did that redeem my previous answer?

Oh and a great stash buster would probably be that really awesome rug in the One Skein book by Leah Radford(I think that is her name. Now I have to get up and go look.) I have a tons of suggestions but can't think of where I could find them right now. I will get back to you on that. Good luck with your stash.

  10. My goodness, you can never have enough sock yarn. What happens if they stop making it?? ;)

I have to say I'm hopelessly addicted to knitting pomatomus from Cookie A. (knitty winter 2005)-- I think I've knit it 3 times and have already set aside 2 skeins I'll definitely be knitting it in again :)

A second new love has to be the socks I'm knitting now, "boyfriend socks" from alice bell -- slippedstitch.blogspot.com ... I just love the cable and rib placement, and cabling without a cable needle makes it fly.

I am also coveting the socks in the latest vogue knitting (winter 2006)-- especially the meg swansen/eliz. zimmerman arch shaped stockings (whcih would totally count for the zimmermania KAL!)

Eunny's (http://www.eunnyjang.com/knit) has *amazing* patterns, too-- I am particularly fond of her chuck's cables and the newest bavarian-inspired pair, bayerische (I can't say no to twisted sts in socks, Cookie got me hooked on them!) Between you, me and the chickens though, I'm waiting with bated breath for her "mini argyle stockings"! :)

Speaking of stockings... the top down knee high formula has been making the rounds and I am just loving high socks... http://www.hjsstudio.com/kneesock.html

Phew. I wish I had my own pc to take a look at links and offer more suggestions (sock ones, anyway!) but! here are a bunch and I hope you find something to inspire you :)

(PS! Did I mention you can never have enough sock yarn?) :)

For lace, I love Adamas by Miriam Felton, available from Knitpicks.

A great single skein pattern is KNitty's Voodoo wristwarmers, especially if you do them in a soft yarn, like angora, alpaca or cashmere.

I'm always losing hats, so maybe knit up a few winter hats?

I love the socks in the Sept. Magknits, and the fall Vogue knitting (which have already been mentioned). Hope you find some inspiration.

  15. Yukon leaves is a nice sock pattern. I've knit them twice. (They look better in real life than the photo on the pattern page.

    http://www.woolandwood.freewebspace.com/yukonleaves.htm

Also I agree with Aija, can't go wrong with Pomatomi! I've done one pair and have two skeins of hand-dyed set aside for two more pairs.

Hederas are good (gotta love Cookie!).

    http://knitty.com/ISSUEspring06/PATThedera.html

I haven't made Baudelaires yet. Gotta get some red-hot sock yarn first.

    http://www.knitty.com/issuesummer06/PATTbaudelaire.html

Does it show that I really like Cookie?

I don't do lace knitting really (except on socks!), but Nova Knitter has a really nice shawl she did called Lily of the Valley (see novaknitter.blogspot.com in August 2006 archives). She doesn't link the pattern in her post (I'm sure she bought it), but if you like it I'm sure she'd tell you who published it. I bet it came from this store: www.haveayarn.ca Also she's doing a nice Storm Water Shawl.

  21. Wow, I came here from Aija's site to leave a comment, but I've been sidetracked looking at all the other cool patterns - you've inadvertently provided a great resource for the rest of us! I hadn't seen those Gentleman's socks before, I'll have to try that one.
I was going to suggest Knitty's Branching Out, that was the first lace pattern I tried and I liked it so much I made 2.

As for socks, I have to reiterate the Pomatomus (so cool looking!) and I love all the patterns by Nancy Bush (I have Knitting Vintage Socks which is so pretty). The sock patterns in the Fall 06 vogue knitting are great too, although I haven't tried any of them yet, but I love the Ripple and Weave pattern.

For socks I really like the Yarrow Ribbed ones from Nancy Bush´s book "Knitting Vintage socks". They look sooo much better in real life than in the book. The ribbing is interesting and it qualifies as TV knitting. Go here to see a pair (my blog):

The Simply Lovely Lace Socks from IK spring 2005 are also lovely!

    HI!

I LOVE knitting up socks too! I have done well "burning' through a lot of my sock yarn stash this summer, and well, I think that I should start working on building it back up again :) (hint hint hint)

I like this first sock pattern becasue it is cute and it is a shorter, ankle sock ... shorter sock = less time spent on knitting the pair (we all want that sometimes)

    http://www.knitlist.com/97gift/aransocks.htm

I still have yet to do this one. I have been waiting to find the *perfect* yarn.
